Skara Brae, Scotland
Not unlike Pompeii, this site was completely covered in a sandstorm 5000 years ago. Though the occupants escaped, the site was preserved under the sand until the later part of the 1800s when another storm partially uncovered it. In this picture, we are looking down into one of the homes of an interconnected village. The far wall has a stone-built shelving unit and niches for whale oil-burning lamps. Bedsteads are situated on each wall with a hearth placed in the center. Skara Brae is an intriguing site and many of the homes can be scrutinized from the pathways above. There is an excellent visitors' center and interpretive museum now on location.
